Deadly roommate disputes can be avoided with technology

Shanghai University is reportedly matching up roommates for its 896 incoming freshmen students using an online analytics program that tabulates their daily routines and hobbies, academic goals and career plans. The new method has won much applause online.

In fact, this is not the only local university that is using technology to matchmake roommates. In 2014, Shanghai Jiao Tong University introduced a similar method of identifying students with similar daily schedules and hobbies and placing them together in one dormitory.

Schools in China, including primary, high schools and universities, usually place prospective roommates together based on their class and subjects, but rarely consider the students' personal preferences.

Take my own experience as an example. At my boarding high school, dormitories for girls and boys were in separate buildings.

Usually six students would be arranged into a 25-square-meter room with three bunk beds and a single shared bathroom. My five female roommates and I were all around the same age and were all in the same classes.

And during my undergraduate years in college, my five female roommates, who were from southern China, and I were all in the exact same major and courses.

Notably, my university seemed to place students from similar geographical regions all together in one dormitory.

It is probably true that a more random method of selecting roommates can bring together different types of individuals from a variety of social and regional backgrounds in order to expose and enlighten them to our country's vibrant diversity.

But this method has also contributed to the growing number of dormitory disputes on Chinese college campuses.

According to research results released by Yangzhou University in 2015, only 50 percent of student interviewees said that they got along well with roommates, while 48 percent said they had regular conflicts with their roommates. Two percent felt that their relationships with their roommates were in "great tension."

The research also revealed that conflicting daily schedules was the primary cause for roommate disputes, followed by factors like differing opinions, sanitation and hygiene problem, and personality conflicts.

My personal experience from boarding high school and college also proves that conflicting daily schedules and life habits are a major cause for roommate disputes.

During my first year of boarding high school, I had some roommates who always stayed up later than our 10:30 pm mandatory bedtime in order to do extra studying.

They would use flashlights to read books until midnight, which often kept me awake. Eventually I had to wear an eye mask and earplugs just to fall asleep.

In some extreme cases, tensions among roommates have been fatal. In 2004, Ma Jiajue, a senior-year undergraduate at Yunnan University killed his four roommates after a card game.

In 2013 a medical school postgraduate from Fudan University named Lin Senhao poisoned his roommate to death out of some pent-up resentment.

In April of this year, a freshman at Sichuan Normal University had his head chopped off by his roommate for playing music.

In June of this year, Kunming University freshman Peng Moumou was stabbed to death by his roommate just for singing.

The most famous of all Chinese roommate disputes resulted in White House petition and has its own Wikipedia page.

Known as the 1995 thallium poisoning case of Zhu Ling, a rival student of Zhu's at China's most prestigious university, Tsinghua University, slowly administered poison to her over the course of many months.

The research conducted by Yangzhou University also showed that 11 percent of interviewees often settled their roommate disputes by quarreling or physically fighting.

Thus, I think Shanghai University's new approach to arranging student roommates based on their daily schedules and hobbies is a wise move and, if it proves successful, should be promoted at other schools.

By taking students' personal habits into consideration and organizing them according to lifestyles and interests, disputes like the above are very likely to decrease.
